There are several different types of nail extensions you can choose from before receiving a manicure. But before you choose which is best for you, itâs good to assess the application process. Keep reading to learn about the various nail extension options. Acrylic Acrylic is one of the most popular nail extension choices. The application process involves gluing a nail tip to your natural nails and using a liquid monomer and a powder polymer to create a thick, polish-like layer on the tip. With the various shapes and powders available, you can obtain different acrylic nail looks. For instance, you can use Young Nails acrylic powder on the nail tip to achieve a specific manicure color and shape the tip for your desired look. Gel Gel nail extensions, or Gel-X, are durable and long-lasting thanks to the curing process. With this type of extension, soft gel polish goes underneath the nail tip and is then pressed onto your natural nail. The tip is then cured with a UV lamp so that it can adhere to the natural nail. Afterward, you can shape and file the tip to the desired length and look. Fiberglass Despite having been around for a long time, fiberglass is an unsung option for nail extensions. The application process includes cutting pieces of fiberglass and sealing it to nails with glue or resin. Afterward, you can apply gel or acrylic polish to the nails. For people interested in natural-looking extensions, fiberglass is the best selection. Unfortunately, itâs not as durable as acrylic or Gel-X. Press-On Nail Tips The best thing about press-on nail tips is that theyâre pre-painted. All you have to do is file the nail to fit the cuticle and desired shape. In the past, people avoided press-on tips because they were often thin, low-quality, and fragile. However, modern press-on nails are much more durable, and they can last as long as a regular manicure. What Should You Choose? After reviewing the common types of nail extensions, itâs time to determine which one is best for you. If youâre interested in long-lasting nails, acrylic and Gel-X are the best choices. However, the most natural-looking option is fiberglass. And if youâre interested in a quick manicure, press-on nail tips are the fastest route. But donât be afraid to try each option to determine your favorite look! Back to News

Gel extensions are one of the most popular ways to get longer and stronger nails. But, of course, this nail technique has its pros and cons. Just like acrylic nails one of the first salon-approved ways to extend your natural nail, they may last up to four weeks, but both have a reputation for being damaging. That's why it's important to understand what they are before deep-diving into the nail extension world. So, we reached out to experts in the nail game. Read on to learn all there is to know about gel nail extensions, including how they're applied and how they differ from acrylic nails, straight from the experts. Meet the Expert Ellegra Davis is a Chicago-based manicurist. She specializes in gel nails and hand-painted nail art. Trenna Seney is an NYC nail technician and editorial manicurist. She's also the founder of Very Shameless Nails, a luxury press-on-nails brand. What Are Gel Nail Extensions? Getting gel nail extensions is a process that involves hard gel built on a natural nail and cured with UV light. Then, the manicurist uses a nail form, which is a sticker that goes under the free edge the tip of the nail, to extend the length of the nail. Top manicurists like Davis and Seney also rely on a newer method. "It's an already shaped full soft gel nail tip that you secure on the natural nail with gel," explains Davis. They come in different sizes and shapes, like stiletto, round, coffin, and square. As it doesn't need filling, it's even quicker than the actual gel extension building. "I recommend brands Kiara Sky Gelly Tips and Apres Gel X," says Seney. The only prerequisite is that your nails can't be bitten to the quick. "For a gel extension, your nail needs to have a little length, not a ton but just a bit," says Davis. "If your nails are too short, there isn't anything for the extension to stick to." Pros and Cons Pros Long and strong nailsLightweight nail tipsAn easier and quicker removal processSafer and healthier than acrylic nails Cons Can weaken nails over timeMight not work well on too short nails How Are Gel Nail Extensions Applied? Whether using pre-shaped gel nail extensions or creating them, the nail technician must first prepare the nails file, clean, and buff your nails. Then, the expert applies a form underneath the natural nail to create the length one by one with a gel builder, a gel primer, and a gel top coat, letting them dry under the LED or UV light. If a pre-shaped kit like Apres Gel X is used, Seney explains "The second step, I use a bonder this dries your nails and a primer this makes your nails sticky so the gel can stick to it," she says. "All these products come with the kit." "Third, I apply a layer of gel to the nails and let it dry in light for about 60 seconds," Seney adds. "After choosing which size fits the client's actual nail, I apply the gel to the inside of the gel extension and place it on the actual nail. Now it's time to press down and hold, then sit in the UV light for 60 seconds." Poof! Nails are ready for your favorite polish and nail art. swaknails Gel Nail Extensions vs. Acrylic Nails Whatâs the Difference? The difference between acrylics and gel estensions lies in the polymerization process, ease of removal, and density. "The process of using gel is definitely quicker. There are no strong odors, and you won't have the hassle of filing or dealing with dust," explains Seney. "With acrylic nails, you have to mix a liquid called monomer and a powder polymer to mold the artificial nail." Davis warns that some salons have manicurists upselling their gel extensions when they're really acrylic. "Gel comes in a pot and looks thick like honey; acrylic is a powder. Know the difference," she notes. Acrylics tend to be harder than gel, which also means less flexibility. They may also be more damaging to the nail, especially as it's more difficult to remove, requiring soaking in acetone and buffing off. Too much buffing also means thinner nails over time. DIY vs. Professional Gel Nail Extensions While both experts caution that DIYing gel extensions at home is not the best idea they recommend letting a professional do the work from adhesion to the removal process, several options and kits are available if you'd like to give it a go. If you take the DIY route, expect to spend at least an hour, if not more, and be sure to buy an all-inclusive kit with everything you'll need. Beetles Poly Extension Gel Nail Kit $30 comes with 48-piece nail forms, a mini lamp, top gel, base gel, a nail file, and nail extension gel in six colors. A much pricier option with less equipment, the ORLY GELFX Builder In A Bottle Intro Kit $100 includes 100 perfect fit forms, a nail primer, top coat, the Builder in a Bottle application, two nail files, and an instructional insert. The website includes several video tutorials on how to achieve the look, and the brand touts an "effortless, all-in-one brush on builder application" with easy-to-remove gels simply by soaking them off. Cost The cost of gel extensions can range anywhere from $80 to $125. However, this also depends on your location and nail salon. If you're looking for unique colors or high-end designs, that may also increase the price. How Long Do Gel Nail Extensions Last? For some people, gel extensions last two weeks; for others, they'll last four to five, according to Davis. "I suggest having a manicure every 12-16 days. Youâll have natural growth after that time," she says. phoebesummernails How Do You Remove Gel Nail Extensions? To remove gel extensions, the nail technician will file down about 85 percent of the your nail tech will soak off the remaining gel in acetone wrap with aluminum foil and wait 15 minutes."Then I gently push off the product and buff the natural nail. Removal should take 30-40 minutes [at] the very most," says Seney. Davis says gel extensions are only detrimental to nail health if not properly removed. "AprĂ©s are soft gel, so they completely soak-off like a regular gel manicure," she explains, noting that intense buffing isn't required. However, like regular gel nails, Davis does recommend getting gel extensions removed by a professionalâpreferably the one who applied them so that they know exactly which type of gel they're removing so that damage is less of a possibility. Are Gel Nail Extensions Safe? If applied and removed properly, gel extensions are very safe. "They're considered a healthier version of acrylics, especially because they don't have the powder or harsh chemicals like methyl methacrylate and toluene," says Seney. You just need to be sure to find a professional you trust and one who has good reviews. The Final Takeaway Much like any other manicure look, the benefit of gel nails is personal. While they undoubtedly create more room for popular nail art, Davis reminds us that nails of all lengths can get in on that trend. "The only nail art trend that works better on a clear gel extension is a 'jelly mani' where the polish is sheer," she notes. Therefore, in the end, Davis boils it down to one simple question "Do you want your nails long?" she asks. "Get extensions."
If youâre a beauty lover on social media, youâre bound to open up your apps at some point and scroll through images of perfectly polished hands with nails that seem to go on for days. Some people are simply born with naturally long and strong nails, while you've probably heard of others using acrylic or gel nail extensions to add length and durability to their nails and ultimately helping their polish to last longer. Acrylic nails come with their own set of complications including but not limited to the often difficult removal process and the fact that wearing them too often can be too harsh on your natural nails. If you're looking for a nail option that's just as long-lasting but isn't quite as damaging, a good option might be gel nail extensions. Meet our experts Emma Eskander, the salon director for New York City nail bar Gilded Ritual, Brittney Boyce, founder of NAILS OF LA and a nail extension specialist for celebrities like Megan Fox, Shay Mitchell, and Olivia RodrigoMore From Women's HealthThere's a good chance that many of the gorgeous manicures with embellished tips and tiny works of art youâre seeing online were made possible by gel nail extensions, but if you're not sure what gel extensions are, how they get applied to your nails, or if they're safe in the first place, we put together an expert-sourced primer on everything you need to know. By the time you're done reading this, youâll be able to decide if theyâre right for you to try. What are gel nail extensions?âGel extensions are a form of nail treatment that extends the existing natural nail,â says Emma Eskander, the salon director for Gilded Ritual, a New York City-based nail bar that offers gel nail extensions alongside a menu of other manicure and pedicure offerings. Essentially, theyâre exactly what they sound like a way to rock longer nails, which gives you more surface area for nail art and polish. Gel extensions are pre-shaped nails that are applied on top of your natural nailâkind of like press-ons but a bit more reliableâand secured by a gel. You can also get extensions in some of your favorite trendy shapes, from coffin and stiletto to everything in between. How are gel nail extensions applied?According to Eskander, gel extensions can differ in application techniques but all require a hard gel cured to your natural nail, which has to have some length to it in the first place for proper adhesion. âFor one technique, the technician uses a form underneath the nail and then applies a hard gel on top of that to the shape and length desired,â says Eskander. âThe treatment is then cured under a UV lamp, which hardens the shape created.â The form gets removed, and the technician will continue on with a layer of polish over it. LED lamps can be used for curing as well. Brittney Boyce, founder of NAILS OF LA and a California-based nail extension specialist for celebrities like Megan Fox, Shay Mitchell, and Olivia Rodrigo, likes the form technique when used with a product like ORLYâs Builder in a Bottle for the control it provides over the finished product. âIt's easy to customize the length with them, and there's a unique role positioning that adapts to the curvature of the nail so it looks very natural,â she contrast, a second technique for gel extensions uses a pre-shaped tip or form that will bond to the natural nail much like a press-on nail, says Eskander. While thereâs a little less customization in terms of length, this method is just as long-lasting and effective. Either way your technician goesâbuilt or pre-shapedâyouâll start the process like any other manicure, with the filling, cleaning, and buffing of your nails to prep for the extensions. Orly GelFX Builder in a BottleOrly GelFX Builder in a BottleCredit are the benefits of gel nail extensions?According to Boyce, gel extensions, which will typically set you back $80 to $125, are literally more flexible for the end user, giving them a leg up on acrylics insofar as they arenât as prone to damaging breaks, brittleness, and cracking. Theyâre also faster to apply than other types of Eskander, the other pros are just as practical. âA benefit of gel is that it allows you to safely grow out your nail by creating an overlay on the natural nail,â she says. âYour manicures also last longer than typical air-dry polish.âAre gel nail extensions safe for nails? While there are no serious risks or major negatives associated with gel nail extensions, itâs always a good idea to find a trusted manicurist or nail artist to apply your extensions. Proper removal and care are also vital; otherwise, Eskander says the nail bed can become weak over do gel nail extensions differ from acrylic nails?Acrylics can be used to extend the length of the nail as well, but most nail artists and manicurists agree that theyâre less ideal than gels for several reasons. âThe real difference lies in the polymerization process, the density and flexibility of the extensions, and the removal process,â says Boyce. âAcrylic is harsher on the nail plate, due to the chemicals used,â adds Eskander. Simply put, the application and removal processes for acrylic extensions are a little more involved than gel, and that can have an adverse effect on your nails. âYou have to buff the nail a lot more for it to adhere, which thins out the nail,â says Boyce. âPlus, the removal process requires electronic filing, which is where most of the damage comes from.âIf youâre looking for any subtlety at all with your extensions, then gelâs probably the way to go. âAcrylics tend to be a stronger, rigid structure,â says Eskander. âGel is more flexible and creates a more natural look.â How long do gel nail extensions last?âIf done with quality and precision, gel extensions can last up to three weeks,â says Eskander. âAt that time, you can either gel a fill,â which is basically applying gel between your cuticle and the area of nail outgrowth, or you can remove them fully and redo the entire service.â Which route to go depends on whether any lifting of the gel took place during the grow-out process, says Eskander. If you have nails that are on the oilier side, you may see lifting as early as two weeks in, says Boyce. That might mean youâll want to go the fresh service route as opposed to filing. Whatâs the best way to remove gel nail extensions? When removing gel nail extensions, itâs best to have a professional technician service you so you donât do any damage to your nails. Often, gel extensions can be removed with acetone just like regular gel polish but usually will need some filing first. Itâs important to note that different pros fall into two camps on preferred removal processes. Gilded Ritual, for example, exclusively uses an e-file technique for removal in order to limit cuticle and nail exposure to acetone. Boyce says some products, such as the ORLY Builder in a Bottle, can actually be removed at home in a pinch with foil removal wrappers if you canât make it to a nail spa. As a general rule, itâs best to seek out professional removal at the same salon where you got the service, since your technician will know exactly what type of gel product was used and how to best remove it.
